One of the biggest challenges for my Vera from Monster Prom cosplay was to create her snake hair, and I am really pleased with how it turned out. For anyone who is looking to make their own snake wig this tutorial provides information about how I assembled mine.
This cosplay and tutorial was made possible by my generous Patrons, head over to Patreon to check out awesome rewards!
You can also find more information on the costume as a whole in my blog post, as well as my video walk through and video makeup tutorial.
Make the Sneks
First up you need to construct the snakes, you’ll need around 13 in total if your head is about the size of mine (22in).
- Cut out the snakes using the pattern. I used a flannel fabric for the belly and a slightly stretchy knit fabric with a scale pattern texture for the top.
- Then pin the top and bottom together, right sides together pleating the top fabric at the nose.
- If you want tongues on the snakes, be sure to add it before you sew the top and bottom together.
- Stitch the top and bottom together, leaving a gap near the head on one side. On the opposite side stitch the seam closed, this will be the tube casing for the wire.
- Add the eyes to the face.
- Turn the snake right side out and stuff it from the end and the neck hole till is is a stuffed as you like.
- Stitch the neck hole closed using a ladder stitch.
- Add wire into the seam.
Note for the wig there is no need to finished the ends of the snakes.
Assembling the wig
You’ll need to make some sort of cap to fit your head, this is what the snakes with then attach to. I made mine from the lighter green flannel and used elastic at the back and under the ears to keep it nice and secure, you might find something else works better for you!
- Take two snakes and stitch them together at the ends, top fabric facing. You will need to make 4 of these (8 snakes total).
- Line up the seams and stitch the 4 pairs of snakes together in a line.
- Stick the group of 8 snakes to the wig cap at the seam, this is the part of the wig, you’ll wan it to be off center for Vera’s look. The stitch the snakes together at the side seams (by hand) to make a solid unit of snakes down to about your ears.
- Arrange the back snakes, stitching them down by hand. Starting with the outer two that sit at a slight angled end up tucked under the other sections if you can. Then three snakes go across the back, tucking under the front section of snakes if possible.
- Lastly, add a tubed, not a complete snake, across the front acting as the “bangs”
Then pose the snakes and get your stone glare ready.
